About the Role

The project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) as part of the PEAPPJF Burundi, aims to design and implement the country's future national incubation mechanism.

The intervention consists of:

  • conducting a comprehensive assessment of existing support mechanisms in Burundi;
  • designing the architecture, governance, and services of the national incubation mechanism;
  • defining the processes, tools, and support pathways for entrepreneurs and MSMEs;
  • proposing an institutional and operational model adapted to the Burundian context;
  • strengthening the capacities of local structures that will be integrated into the system; supporting the initial launch of the mechanism, particularly in agro-pastoral value chains.
  • The objective is to structure a coherent, effective, and sustainable national incubation system capable of improving entrepreneurial support and sustaining the creation of viable MSMEs in Burundi.

About the Role

The Agribusiness & Value Chains Expert will provide specialized technical support to develop, structure, and strengthen the agricultural and agri-food sectors targeted by the PEAPPJF Burundi program.


He/she will help equip future incubation facilities and local support structures to improve support for entrepreneurs, the performance of rural MSMEs, and integration into priority agro-pastoral value chains.


Main responsibilities

  • Conduct analysis of targeted agro-pastoral value chains (constraints, opportunities, actors, markets).
  • Identify the technical needs of entrepreneurs, MSMEs, and cooperatives for each value chain segment.
  • Propose economic development solutions: improvement of productivity, processing, quality, market access, formalization.
  • Contribute to the design of incubation pathways and technical modules related to agribusiness.
  • Support the structuring of viable business models for rural MSMEs receiving support.
  • Advise on standards, traceability, packaging, and certification of agricultural and agri-food products.
  • Strengthen the capacities of local teams responsible for entrepreneurial support.
  • Produce tools, technical guides, and analysis notes for the project and stakeholders.

Required profile

  • Master's degree in agribusiness, agriculture, agri-food, rural economics, development, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 7 to 10 years of experience in the analysis and development of agricultural/agri-food value chains.
  • Proven experience in supporting rural MSMEs, cooperatives, groups, or agricultural entrepreneurs.
  • Demonstrated practice in value chain approaches, product development, quality, and standards.
  • Experience in projects funded by international donors (AfDB = an asset).
  • Experience in capacity building (training, technical coaching).

Key skills

  • Excellent knowledge of agro-pastoral value chains.
  • Ability to diagnose production, processing, and marketing systems.
  • Proficiency in economic analysis and business model modeling tools.
  • Good teaching and writing skills.
  • Fluency in French (spoken/written).
  • Knowledge of the Great Lakes region = an asset.
